Graham Drake's Exploration
of the Enneagram and NLP

Some Notes

Monday 3rd November
I started to read an article on 'New Age' concepts,
and was intrigued to be led to The Enneagram.

Friday 14th November
Received three books in the post, via Amazon,
which will hopefully provide me with a balanced view
of this fascinating new, to me, modality.

"The Essential Enneagram:
The Definitive Personality Test
and Self-Discovery Guide"

David N. Daniels

"The 9 Ways of Working: How to Use the Enneagram
to Discover Your Natural Strengths and Work More Effectively"

Michael J. Goldberg

"The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram: Nine Faces of the Soul"
Sandra Maitri

Friday 21st November
Three months of anguish aren't exactly conducive to 'finding yourself'
but I'm pretty confident that I now know my Enneagram type,
even though, during these last 3 weeks, I've had days
where I thought I was a 2, 7 or 9,
but I'll accept that I am really a 5,
but it's not been as straightforward as I anticipated.

Saturday 22nd November
Decided to write a report/website of my learning to understand
the depth of this new thinking.

Sunday 23rd November
I took the Full Test at The Enneagram Institute
and was kindly offered another 'Free go', in a couple of weeks,
when my head should be more focused,
because both the 5 and 7 were equally prominent.

Monday 24th November
Started to put this page together and while I was squirreling away,
I had a look at the Arithmologia (Arithmologie) Frontpiece, by Kircher, at
http://www.blasderobles.com/Varia/Kircher/images/arith0.gif
and see how the nine Cherubim could fit into the story,

Click here for the full picture

but it doesn't as there are
three triangles V a flowing mechanism.

Wednesday 26th November
Tested as a 5 at Tickle
and was led astray by the superb range of Tests
that are also available there.

It seems that I'm also an ISFP. (E9,2)

Thursday 4th December
Received a Mailshot/application form to partake in a,
free, 'Life Coaching Certificate' training course.

Monday 8th December
Posted 'Life Coaching' application Form.

Monday 15th December
Started reading (properly, but slowly)

The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram—Nine Faces of the Soul

by Sandra Maitri.

Friday 19th December
Received the first three Modules
of the remote training course
for a "Certificate in Life Coaching".

Sunday 21st December
My little mind is now well confused by NLP.

Sunday 4th January 2004
uploaded my first webnotes on NLP.

Monday 5th January
Started work on the first Module
for the 'Life Coaching' Certificate.

Tuesday 6th January
Listened to the CD from
the Performance Partnership.

Tuesday 20th January
Posted my first 'Life Coach' submission.

Saturday 24th January
Felt stable enough in life
to retake the full Rheti Enneagram test again...
Type 5, The Investigator: 24
Type 9, The Peacemaker: 22
Type 7, The Enthusiast: 21
Type 1, The Reformer: 17
Type 4, The Individualist: 15
Type 8, The Challenger: 12
Type 3, The Achiever: 12
Type 2, The Helper: 11
Type 6, The Loyalist: 10

Saturday 22nd May
Intrigued by Mind Maps

Thursday 2nd December
Received an interesting E-mail

What the Enneagram Is and Is Not

The Enneagram is a diagram for the cooperative functioning
of the two fundamental cosmic laws,
the Law of Three and the Law of Seven,
so structuring the Overall Universal Law.
The Enneagram is not a list of personality types.
The Enneagram is a sacred, very powerful symbol,
brought to us by Gurdjieff himself, and by no other.
It is not a Sufi symbol.

If not correctly used, the enneagram can be harmful,
due to its high power of transformation.
This is why Gurdjieff left it only in the sphere of oral teaching.
From this we conclude that the Enneagram is not to be used superficially,
without knowledge of the laws.

According to Gurdjieff’s Five Being-obligolnian-strivings
(Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson, p. 386),
only the last striving is concerned with helping others.

Do no try to help other when you do not Know.
Either you know and do things in the right way, or just do nothing,
and live your life the way you can.
This is the point of view of this book.

The following information is culled from a variety of web sites that I visited on my first fascinating Enneagram explorations, on the 3rd November, and I will give full credit,
once I've re-found which sites they were copied/borrowed from.

The Types

1 THE REFORMER

The Rational, Idealistic Type:
Principled, Purposeful, Self-Controlled, and Perfectionist

Reformer, Judge, Crusader, Critic, Proselytizing.

Resentment with the fear of being wrong, bad, evil or corruptible.

In a search for perfection,
the attention of the One goes to the environment,
improvement, imperfection and correction.

Self Definition
I am good, I am right, I am in control, I am appropriate and I am incorruptible

Avoidance
Anger, Limitation, Impropriety

Goal
To reclaim a sense of Serenity for true perfection.

Perfectionist-These people take action to create a logical and orderly outer world. They do not feel that this order is based on their will but upon objective universal rules and laws that give them a sense of what is right, correct and fair. They believe that most human problems would simply not exist if everyone followed such rules and they actively promote this view in the outer world of people and things.

They seek and create environments and cultivate kindred spirits where such rules govern the conduct of the day. They not only comply with the rules but they are confident that they can write these rules for themselves and everyone else. They know what is right and how to write the rules to make it happen. This also includes the administrator or manager who writes (or rewrites) the instructions to change the traditional approach to things! These occupations are heavily Business.

Manager: Retail Store
Consultant: Management
Manager: Sales
Manager: High Level Corporate Executive
Manager: Restaurant, Cafeteria, Bar or Food Service
Credit Investigator or Mortgage Broker

Holds to unrealistic Standards

2 THE HELPER

The Caring, Interpersonal Type: Generous,
Demonstrative, People-Pleasing, and Possessive

Giver, Caretaker, Helper, Nurturer, Advisor, Manipulating

Pride with the fear of being worthless, useless, dispensable or inconsequential

In a search for higher will, the attention of the Two goes to flattery,
other's needs, the one who can meet their needs and being helpful.

Self Definition
I am caring, I am nurturing, I am helpful, and I am appealing

Avoidance
Own needs, Own neediness, Immutability

Goal
To reclaim their sense of humility in service to a higher will.

Helper-These people seek closure with other people. This closure seeks to be influential in the decisions of those important to the Helper. They willingly help those who accept their influence and appreciate their efforts. They genuinely enjoy the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. They do caring things that make logical sense. Hence they will be drawn to and create environments that service the needs of others and are personally rewarding to them. We find them in “high touch” occupations that provide services and consultation. Traditionally, women have staffed many of these occupations. Helpers are attracted to Business, Religion and Education.

Human Resources Planner
Consultant: General
Clergy, All Denominations (Except Priests)
Home Management Advisor or Home Economist
Administrator: Colleges or Technical Institutes
Protestant Minister

Calls attention to what they have done for others.

3 THE ACHIEVER

The Success-Oriented, Pragmatic Type:
Adaptable, Excelling, Driven and Image-Conscious

Performer, Motivator, Achiever, Producer, Status Seeker, Deceiving

Vanity with the fear of being incompetent, inefficient, unmasked or unable to do

In a search for hope, the attention of the Three goes to
performance, prestige, and status for approval.

Self Definition
I am productive, I am successful, I am competent and I am the best

Avoidance
Failure, Nothingness, Second Best

Goal
To reclaim a sense of honesty to restore hope and authenticity.

Motivator-These Heart people operate from the collective personal values of their constituency. They know, instinctively, what a group wants or they can find out very rapidly. They know how to present an image that responds to the desires of the group. As such they can be very influential in group settings or one-on-one. They seek positions which influence the decisions that are made. They will do their own homework and utilize marketing research. They seek the opportunity to become role models for co-workers and clients, alike. The more people that they can influence, the more successful they become. Hence, the Motivator can be found anywhere from entry level, looking up, to the top, basking in adulation. Opportunities for Motivators are found in Education, Religion and Health occupations.

Sister in Roman Catholic Religious Order
Teacher: School Grades I through 12
Doctor of Osteopathy
Brother in Roman Catholic Religious Order
Teacher: Speech Pathology or Therapy
Teacher Aide

Desires to impress others.

4 THE INDIVIDUALIST

The Sensitive, Withdrawn Type:
Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, and Temperamental

Individualist, Artist, Mystic, Melodramatic, Elitist, Demeaning

Envy with the fear of being painfully lacking, inadequate, flawed or defective

In a search for connection to original source, the attention of the Four
goes to the search for meaning, what is missing, melancholy, and longing for the unavailable.

Self Definition
I am unique, I am special, I am aesthetic, and I am tasteful

Avoidance
Ordinary, Commonness, Commonplace, negative mirroring

Goal
To reclaim a sense of emotional balance to reconnect with original source.

Specialists-These people have a unique inner vision of possibility that they struggle to share with others. They will not accept the help of others in shaping their vision but do seek to evoke a recognition (closure) of this vision on the part of others. They seek and create environments that will allow them to nourish and express this inner vision. Ideally this environment will allow them creative expression and a receptive audience. Interestingly these people appear to have utilized education and professional status to gain a forum for their inner vision. Specialists find occupations in Education, Religion, Science, Arts and Health.

Architect
Priest or Monk
Consultant: Education
Director of Religious Education
Research Worker
Physician: Pathology

Desire for Special treatment.

5 THE INVESTIGATOR

The Intense, Cerebral Type:
Perceptive, Innovative, Secretive, and Isolated

Observer, Investigator, Thinker, Sage, Voyeur, Condescending

Avarice with the fear of not existing,
annihilation, being fully embodied or contamination

In search of omniscience and knowing, the attention
of the Five, goes to observing, hiding and withholding.

Self Definition
I am knowledgeable, I am perceptive, I observant and I am different

Avoidance
Emptiness, Not Knowing, Surplus, Negative Visibility

Goal
To reclaim a sense of non-attachment for true knowing and omniscience.

Thinker-These people are open and flexible. They like to watch both the present and possible, quietly ponder and use linear logic to predict the way things will unfold. They seek the resources that will allow them to proceed with this grand investigation. They generally have an individual journey and seek few companions. They seek to create environments that will allow them to reflect and acquire what they need. As a result of their efforts they tend to have insight into things that are formative, including natural laws. The Thinker finds occupations in Science, Trades or Justice.

Naval Electronic Technician
Engineer: Electrical or Electronic
Surveyor
Computer Programmer
Scientist: Chemistry
Lawyer

Detached from feelings.

6 THE LOYALIST

The Committed, Security-Oriented Type:
Engaging, Responsible, Anxious, and Suspicious

Devils Advocate, Loyalist, Sceptic, Guardian, Rebel, Persecuting

Fear of fear itself and of being alone, unprotected,
tendency to submit or physical abandonment

In a search for faith and security, the attention of the Six
goes to doubt and fear, scanning for and focusing on danger
and hidden motives or agendas.

Self Definition
I am cooperative, I am dutiful, I am provocative and I am compliant or rebellious

Avoidance
Deviance, Uncertainty, Different

Goal
To reclaim a sense of courage to restore true faith.

Loyalist-These people are actually open and flexible but they operate under an umbrella of protection. A person, group, institution or the workplace can provide this protection. Loyalists display a fierce loyalty to the source of his/her protection. Their inner world of subjective personal values polices the workplace in the same way that "junk yard dogs" protect their turf! Any change sensed in the present environment will be assessed relative to their protection. As this processing takes place, the Loyalist will lift up objections to any change.

After processing, the Loyalist will either be inalterably opposed to the change or will allow the change to take place. If the change enhances protection, the Loyalist will have invented the change and be its biggest advocate. The Loyalist really believes that he/she, better than others, represents the best interests of the protecting person or group. Towards superiors (source of protection) there will be abject subjugation, with same expected from their subordinates. Opportunities for loyalty come from Business and Trades

Stock Clerk or Storekeeper
Food Service Worker
Waiter or Waitress
Bookkeeper
Typist
Library Attendant or Assistant

Tendency to be Defensive.

7 THE ENTHUSIAST

The Busy, Fun-Loving Type:
Spontaneous, Versatile, Acquisitive, and Scattered

Epicure, Entertainer, Optimist, Adventurer, Joker, Rationalizing, Patronizing

Gluttony with a fear of being incomplete, limited, inferior, or confined.

In the search for right work and focused concentration, the attention of the
Seven goes to planning, imagination, and multiple options.

Self Definition
I am happy, I am fun, I am enthusiastic and I am playful

Avoidance
Emotional pain, Sadness, Boredom

Goal
To reclaim a sense of sobriety for right work.

Enthusiast-These people demand openness and their own time frame in tasting the experiences that the outer world has to offer. They drink in all that life has to offer and invite others to join them in the quest. When they are not experiencing an adventure, they are actively planning their next one. They tend to develop a wide range of practical skills and logically decide that more is better. They look for and create environments that will afford these experiences (or, at least, support their habit for experiences) and congenial companionships. The congenial experience of adventure is an essential part of this environment. Finally, all of this experience results in the development of a surprisingly broad range of practical skills and abilities, which they may or may not choose to utilize. The Enthusiast enjoys occupations in the Trades and Justice.

Marketing Professional
Service Worker
Construction Labourer
Police Officer
Electrician
Labourer

Desire for constant distraction.

8 THE CHALLENGER

The Powerful, Dominating Type:
Self-Confident, Decisive, Wilful, and Confrontational

Leader, Solution Master, Boss, Maverick, Protector, Defying

Excess with the fear of being humiliated, controlled, powerless or vulnerable

In a relentless search for truth, the attention of the Eight goes to the issue of
justice, power and influence - who has it, where it is, and how to get it.

Self Definition
I am invincible, I am powerful, I am strong and I am authentic, self-reliant

Avoidance
Weakness, Vulnerability, Mediocre

Goal
To reclaim their sense of innocence in order to acknowledge a higher truth.

Champion-These people take action to implement their vision of possibilities which do not currently exist in the outer world (world of people and things). These people will work strenuously to bring their vision to reality. They readily enlist the support of those who share this vision and they confront those who do not share it. Their inner world accommodates both objective logic and subjective personal values. They seek and actively create environments that will give them the tools (both people and things) to bring their vision into reality. They are certainly "enterprising" but economic gain (while it may come; they sell a vision, not a product) is not the motivating factor. Many of their opportunities come from the Arts and Mental occupations.

Journalist
Photographer
Psychologist
Actor
Public Relations Worker or Publicity Writer
Artist or Entertainer

Always in control.

9 THE PEACEMAKER

The Easygoing, Self-Effacing Type:
Receptive, Reassuring, Agreeable, and Complacent
Peacemaker, Mediator, Naturalist, Accommodator, Abdicating

Indolence with the fear of being shutout, loveless, discordant or inharmonious

In a search for unconditional love and union, the attention of the Nine goes to
spreading out, diffusing, and identifying with and merging with others.

Self Definition
I am agreeable, I am easy going, I am peaceful and I am unassuming

Avoidance
Conflict, Discord, Complication

Goal
To reclaim right action and their own sense of self for true love.

Peacemaker-These people enjoy places that have external peace and harmony. However, they can take action in bringing peace and harmony to places of discord. They are uniquely equipped to do this job as they are not really interested in either "closing" or "opening" the outer world. They are simply out of touch with the agendas that the rest of us carry into our outer world pursuits. Hence they do not have the baggage that most of us carry in a conflicted situation. In fact, the Peacemaker always wonders, deep in their heart, how the situation resulted in conflict in the first place. Nothing is that important to the Peacemaker. Restoring the peace is, however. Because he/she lacks an agenda, the Peacemaker can accurately reflect how each of the conflicted parties appears to the other. The Peacemaker does not accept any of the excuses for the disagreement since they firmly believe that there is no excuse for conflict! When the conflict is resolved, no one is more surprised than the Peacemaker. We find Peacemakers in the Trades, and Business occupations.

Child Care Worker

Restaurant Worker: Table Setting, Cleaning
